The Effects of Associational Solidarity and Functional Solidarity of Adult Children on Depression of Korean Older People
Shin Jee-Soo

Abstract
This study aims to comparatively analyze the impact of associational solidarity and functional solidarity of adult children on depression between bereaved elderly and those who are not bereaved. The data used in this analysis was the Korean Elderly Survey conducted in 2020 and 9,058 older adults were statistically analyzed through multiple regression analysis.
The main results of this research are as follows. As for associational solidarity, frequency of contact through telephone/SMS/email/mail and frequency of face-to-face contact were significantly associated with depression. As for functional solidarity, older adults with higher instrumental assistance from their adult children had a significantly higher level of depression, whereas more financial assistance was not associated significantly. When compared with bereaved older adults, instrumental assistant positively impacted upon depression among the older adults with a spouse. For the bereaved older adults, frequency of contact through telephone/SMS/email/mail reduced a level of depression and instrumental assistance of adult children significantly increased depression. Based on the results of this study, the suggestions are as follows. First, although adult children are not able to visit their elderly parents, contact through phone calls, video calls or smartphone messages affects the depression of the elderly.
Second, the bereaved elderly should receive instrumental assistance to the extent that depression does not increase. Also, for the bereaved elderly to be independent of the instrumental support from their adult children, it is necessary to provide diverse institutional strategies.
